Danville is a small city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 23,878 at the 2010 census. It is located on the shore of Lake Merritt and adjacent to Redwood City on the south side of San Francisco Bay. The Danville area was first inhabited by Native Americans including the Ohlone people and Coast Miwok people. In 1846, Donner Party members were lost in the Danville area while searching for trails leading to San Francisco. The party's leader, James Fritchey, died of a heart attack near Danville after struggling through difficult terrain for hours without food or water. In 1851, John Sutter founded what would become Sacramento County and acquired land north of San Francisco Bay for this purpose. In 1852 he built what would become hisrastate's only town - namedafter him - at the foot of Mount Diablo where he sold beer and other goods from his store front to visitors who came down from Sacramento Valley during summertime tours of California. In 1865, when America became a nation following its Civil War, General George Custer led an American army across Northern California into Nevada Territory in order to find goldfields beyond the Great Basin (now Oregon). His unit encountered Native Americans at White Sands Creek near present-day Rancho Obierto in what is now Contra Costa County; Custer killed several Indian men before being forced back across White Sands Creek by friendly forces under Lieutenant Colonel John Gibbons with whom he had earlier fought at Yerba Buena Island and Stockton Island off southern Marin County. This event helped spur development along White Sands Creek as early residents began exploring potential mineral rights sites around Rancho Obierto and nearby towns such as Pleasanton and Oakland because they believed that any new discovery could bring wealth and fame to their village/towns rather than just allowing Indians access to these resources merely so that they could continue using them without anyone else having any say in how things worked out! In 1851, when Rancho Rincon del Rio was patented to ranchers George Cimarron and James Wolk (the father of Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley), they started building a post office called Rincon Post Office just outside what is now Danville. They named their new headquarters for General José Joaquín Arguelles y Costilla who had recently won distinction as brigadier general during Mexican–American War victory at Monterrey over American forces under Ulysses S Grant. When it opened on December 12th, 1851 - one week after Mexico's independence from Spain - it was one of only 10 such offices established within Mexican borders during that decade. A year later (1852), Palo Alto came into being when part of Rancho Rincon del Rio passed from George Cimarron to John Atherton based on an agreement between them over water rights in Kinney Valley adjacent to modern-day Palo Alto
