It is located on the west side of San Francisco Bay and it has been known as a manufacturing center for both textiles and autos since the early 20th century. Danville was founded by men from Danville, Illinois in 1881 as a small town on the outskirts of San Francisco. It is part of the San Joaquin County seat and lies within the Fresno-Turlock metropolitan area. The townsite was named forCaptain Daniel Vaughan, an early settler in this region. The first permanent inhabitants of what would become Danville were three Frenchmen who founded a mission called Rancho San Francisco de la Paz in 1821. A year later they moved to what today is downtown Danville, where they built a wooden frame church that still stands. In 1827, Captain Vaughan donated land to the Mission San Francisco de Asís for the establishment of a Catholic mission here. In 1853 Danville became part of California when it was admitted as a separate state; its name subsequently changed to Fresno. During World War II, Danville served as an airfield for military operations over Southern California and Nevada. Afterward, it experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for Fresno and Turlock counties. However, during the late 1990s and 2000s there began to be concern about traffic congestion on State Route 99W (the "Danville Beltway"), which led to several redevelopment projects around town aimed at easing traffic congestion or reopening stalled roads in hopes of revitalizing local businesses and increasing tourism opportunities. Today, much of downtown Danville remains unaltered from its days as an agricultural center – many buildings still stand from when agriculture was one of the town's mainstay industries; some are even still used today by local farmers as storage facilities or office space (e.g., Old Post Office). Other areas have been renovated into larger homes or apartments while smaller businesses relocated elsewhere because of increased competition from larger cities nearby (i e., Turlock). In addition, automobile production has waned significantly since technological advances made large SUVs more difficult or impossible to produce on site; instead large trucks now ply I-5 between Fresno and Bakersfield en route to various parts around America (e e .g., Las Vegas). Despite this overall decline in manufacturing activity throughout much rural Northern California due largely to global economic forces outside their control (the drop in oil prices has had little discernible impact on these communities), DowntownDanville stubbornly retains its character despite slowly declining population density over time

A post office was founded at Danville on March 25, 1850, by James Earle Bogue with the name of what is now Albany. The town prospered as a transportation center due to its location on the Mayacausta Railroad and its close proximity to Stockton and Sacramento. In 1857, the state legislature changed the name to Danville in honor of General Philip Halleck (1795-1868). In 1872, two years after it became an incorporated city, Danville developed into a manufacturing center with several breweries and tanneries being established. By 1916, there were more than 20 businesses operating in Danville.A major factor that helpedDanville grow during this time was its friendship with fellow San Francisco Bay Area city Oakland which had recently become part of California during the gold rush era.During World War II many German Americans fled Nazi Germany for America because they believed that they would be safe under American rule.
