Danville is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Danville–San Ramon line of the San Francisco Bay Area and is part of the San Jose metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Danville was George Wessels, who arrived in 1827. Wessels named his new land "Belmont" after himself and his son-in-law, Belknap Swayne. In 1858, Captain Charles Kettering founded an oil depot there and named it David Wells City after himself and his wife Sarah Wells. By 1860, Danville had a population of 100 people. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its role as an agricultural center for Contra Costa County and its location on the railroadlink between San Francisco and Oakland. Today, Danville remains a vibrant community with strong cultural ties to its nearby cities – including San Jose – as well as to other surrounding communities throughout Northern California. In 1906, when California became a state, Danville voted to join it; however, its votes were not counted until 1912 because they did not meet certain requirements (such as having a registered vote). On November 3 that year,Danville residents voted by referendum to secede from Contra Costa County and form their own independent state called California Statehood within days of each other - an event which led to some confusion because both referendums took place simultaneously in several newspapers across Northern California (the legality of this second secession has been challenged unsuccessfully by numerous individuals). The city's incorporation occurred on December 12th of that year under the name "Danville". Today Danville is known for its Historic District which includes many notable buildings dating back to before Californication including: The old Fort Point Arsenal/Armory (now known as Lafayette Park), Fort Point Christian Church (now inside DowntownDanville), Driggs House (formerly occupied by rubber farmer John Dickson Carr) and much more!
