In 1870 danville annexed territory northward including Walnut Creek; this annexation created a total area size exceeding 200 square miles (510 km2). By 1900 Danville had reached its peak population with more than 3800 citizens living in streets and squares alone while rural areas continued to be annexed into the city limits creating an urban sprawl reaching out to rural communities up to 10 miles away . Despite this rapidly growing population, economic growth slowed significantly beginning in World War I due largely to factors such as increased military spending overseas instead of investment here at home. After World War I came Prohibition which caused unemployment among workers who lost their jobs because alcohol prohibition went into effect; this led businesses like breweries to close down and lead to increasing crime rates as well as social unrest which further hampered economic development throughout much of postwar America. However during 1946–1948 there were some significant advances made when Mayor John Ahearn founded CRT Broadcasting Company which eventually changed entire business landscape forever . In 1870, Captain Alfred Sutter came to central California from Stockton with his family and began farming here also. He built the first dry goods store at 3rd Street and Main Street in Danville in 1875; it became one of the most successful businesses in town. After years of growth during which both stores operated successfully until 1911 when Mr. Sutter's death left the store unprofitable due to competition from larger businesses), business slowed down during World War I before roaring back during Prohibition because no one wanted liquor running around without licenses! In 1925-26 new construction began on Third Street between Main Avenue and State Route 120; this project led to increased business for the store until 1929 when prohibition ended!
