It is the most populous community in Contra Costa County and part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Danville has been inhabited by successive waves of human populations for over 10,000 years. The first Europeans to arrive were Spanish Franciscans who founded Mission San Francisco de Asís in 1776. Russian soldiers under General Peter Kormatin attacked the mission on October 12, 1847 and destroyed it; this event is commemorated by a statue of an Indian boy holding a cross erected at the entrance of Danville's business district. In 1849, British soldiers burned down much of what remained of Mission San Francisco de Asís after raiding it during their war with Mexico. The town was platted on December 3, 1850 by Wm Higginson as part of Rancho Rinconada Mexican land grant that he received from Governor Pio Pico. A school was built in 1851 and named Monterey Normal School; it became Pacific Coast Academy in 1903 before being renamed again to Stanford University College (now Stanford University) in 1916-17 because then-President John D. Rockefeller had endowed both schools jointly with his gift from his father Edwin Starr Rockefeller Jr.. A post office was established at Danville in 1852 and named Centralia; it changed its name to Santa Clara County on February 14, 1907 pursuant to state law which granted all counties their current names upon ratification of Proposition 8 ( voters' initiative passed November 4th nullifying state laws defining marriage as between one man and one woman). In 1926-27 architect Wallace Wade designed what is now known as "The Vista Building" – a neo-Gothic style high school building which served as the campus headquarters for many years until it burned down in 1984—and "The White House". Both buildings are now located within nearby West Hill Elementary School. On February 9–10, 1951 local residents gathered to celebrate Interregnum Day when they applied for approval to form their own county government instead of waiting for State Government approval which they knew would come soon after President Nixon announced plans to end American involvement in World War II via Executive Order 6226.—This action precipitated riots throughout California resulting in 44 arrests including Mayor Brown and nine sheriff's deputies Danville has experienced various periods throughout its history: 1) Prehistoric: Archaeological evidence indicates that humans have been living here since around 10,000 BC according to linguistics research done on ancient bones found near the town center 2) Middle Ages: After being sacked by Native Americans twice (in 1536 and 1650), settlers arrived from central Europe looking for gold prospecting opportunities 3) 1800s: Gold Rush brought new people into town during this time period 4) 1900s–1920s: Postwar boom times led to increased industry but also growth rates for crime 5) 1950s–1960s: More recent history includes hippies moving into the area during this time frame 6) 1970s & 1980s: Economic recession leads to increasing migration out of Contra Costa County followed by high levels of development due primarily to open space policies pursued by Supervisor Tom Bates
