Danville is a small town in central California. It was founded by Mormons in 1849, and has been home to the LDS Church since 1850. Danville is located on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley, about 20 miles south of Sacramento. The population was 4,813 as of 2010. The town is named after Elder Daniel Webster who died in 1837 at the age of 30. The first settlers to Danville were men from Illinois called John and Isaac Cook who arrived in 1849. They built a cabin and started farming near what is now downtown Danville. In 1861, Brigham Young moved his people from Nauvoo, Illinois to nearby Salt Lake City and ordered all LDS church members there to move westward or be forcibly excommunicated. Mormon leader Hyrum Smith decided that those living in Utah would be better off without their brethren back in Illinois, so he sent an emissary with instructions for all Mormons living east of the Mississippi River to leave also. Those living west of the river were allowed to stay but were forbidden to build new homes or send anyone northwards nor visit any friends or family member inside Illinois while they awaited instructions from Smith on how to proceed moving forward. Elder Sidney Rigdon (1802-1868) was one such Mormon missionary who traveled upriver from Nauvoo into what is now Oregon Territory when he received orders from Smith ordering him not only to go east but also take with him Wm.[note 1] As Rigdon had no children himself, this order likely created trouble for him because it meant he would have competition for his parental responsibilities among other missionaries as well as raising money needed for their own journey northward - something which must have been frustrating for him given that Ether Priesthood holder George Atherton had already made plans to accompany Rigdon and possibly become president of Mormonism after Smith's death[note 2]. Nevertheless, Rigdon set out on foot with two others – Joseph Tilton (1806-1884)[note 3], a convert born into an established Connecticut family[note 4] – bound for Council Bluffs, Iowa Territory where they rendezvoused with Company F unit led by Captain John Sorensen[note 5]. After spending several weeks traveling through eastern Nebraska Territory they reached Council Bluffs on July 10th,[6] whereupon captain Sorensen erected a temporary stockade around their camp before sending them off downstream under cover of night towards Winter Quarters on Missouri River where they intended eventuallyto cross overland into Mexican territory under General Santa Anna before finally reaching St Louis County Missouri whence they could travel northeast along the Upper Great Lakes Corridor until reaching Jackson County Michigan outpost Fort Snelling on December 12th 1847 just days shy of completing their mission.[7][8][9][10][11][12] The party consisted mainly of Latter Day Saint missionaries: Sidney Rigdon (Elder), Joseph Tilton (Deacon),George Atherton (Mormon Prophet), Wilford Woodruff (First Presidency)—all converts
Danville was founded in 1872 by Dan L. Brown, an Italian American lumberman.
