Danville, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It is located about an hour's drive west of Fresno and about two hours northeast of Stockton. The first Europeans to visit what is now Danville were Spanish missionaries in 1776. They named it Los Angeles de las Alas because they saw a hillock with beautiful views near the community. The name "Los Angeles" means "place where live los ángeles." In 1846, John C. Fremont discovered gold in danville and decided to establish an adobe ranch there. He named the community "Fremont" after himself and General John Custer who had helped him find gold at Sutter's Fort on December 24, 1848. The townsite was platted by Captain Edward Halleck on May 5, 1850 as part of his Rancho Rinconadanamed for José María Rinconado y Valdez who also founded Nueva Vizcaya some miles east of Fremont across from today's Danville Elementary School boundary line southward to what is now Rio Vista Avenue; northward along current Rio Vista Avenue thence eastward to its junction with present day Woodruff Boulevard just south of Pioneer High School
