The town of Danville was founded in 1847 by Captain George Fenton. The first post office was established in 1848, and the name of the town was changed to Danville in 1861. The population of Danville increased rapidly during the early 1800s due to its location on the relocated San Joaquin River. In 1878, a dam was built to provide irrigation for the agricultural area around Danville. The dam is still extant and is used today to generate electricity.
