The name of the town originated with an offer from Elisha Stevens to give him $5 for every head of cattle he sold. A new post office was built in 1881 and it became known as Danville because Captain Elias Danforth offered to pay for its construction with goods he received from his sales. In 1886, the original tracks leading toDanville were severed by Union Pacific Railroad officials who decided that two smaller towns would be better served by one train station. Danville's growth continued during World War II when it became an important munitions production center due to its location within easy reach of San Francisco Bay Area airfields such as Moffett Field and Stanford University Air Force Base. During the war, many jobs were lost when American factories closed but job opportunities began to develop soon after the war ended thanks to new technology and economic development brought about by postwar military spending. Today, Danville is known for its agricultural products such as apples, grapes, almonds and other crops; its Famous Blue Ribbon Coffee Company; its arts scene with several theaters including The Arts District Cultural Center; and its large number of historic homes dating back to the 1800s which are open for tours or are used as vacation rentals
Danville was founded in 1849 by John Danforth, a fur trader and miller. It became a town in 1854, and was named for General Daniel Webster. In 1860, the city of Danville annexed the villages of Acton and Arlington.
