Although most residents were Baptist missionaries working to convert Native Americans to Christianity during this time period, other religions began to grow at a rapid pace in Danville during this time period including Methodist Episcopalism and Roman Catholicism. Danville was founded in 1795 by Captain George Danforth, who named it for his old home town of Danville, Virginia. The first permanent residents of the area were Native Americans, and the first white person to live in the present-day city was John D'Anson in 1824. In 1847, Danville became a county seat and was incorporated as a city in 1852. The city's population peaked at over 100,000 in 1920, but declined during the Great Depression and World War II. In 1949, the city annexed most of Santa Clara County and became its new metropolitan center.
