Dana Point is a small town in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south coast of Dana Point Peninsula. The name Dana Point comes from two separate places: "Dana" meaning deepwater and "Point" meaning headland or peninsula. The first place was named by Captain James Cook for his discovery of this cape in 1768 during his Voyage of HMS Discovery. The second place was given to the town by Mrs. Atherton in 1892 as part of her gift to the people of Dana Point after she moved to that location from Carlsbad Caverns nearby.
