Gun targets have been a part of Dana Point history for as long as the town has been existent. The first target to be shot at in the town was a blacksmith’s shop, located on present-day Prospect Street. In 1876, local farmer John J. Keenan built the first rifle range in Dana Point and began shooting at gun targets out of his home. In 1903, gun range founder Colonel James Haggerty donated land on which the current Dana Point High School now stands. At that time, handguns were not allowed to beshot at from within one hundred feet of any other person or object. This restriction was lifted in 1934 and today handguns are legal to shoot from any distance within 100 feet of an individual target or anyone else wearing a target safety device (e.g., a GLOCK pistol). Since 1933, when NRA member Bob Schieffer started firing pistols competitively at municipal courses throughout Southern California, Dana Point has been home to some of the most accomplished shooters in America. Many top pistol shooters have represented Dana Point in national championships and exhibitions - including three US Olympic gold medalists (2x800 meters hurdles; 4x100meter hurdles; 4x400meter hurdles), world champions such as Jerry Mickelson (professional golfer), Tim Donohue (athlete) and Rick Kuykendall (football player). With more than twenty thousand registered members across nine divisions - handgunners only make up 2% –gun targets still play an important role in many local events statewide!

Dana Point is a town located on the Southern California coast, about 25 miles south of San Diego. It was founded in 1887 by Captain John Dana and his family as an agricultural community. The town developed into a mining town during the 1880s, and began to grow commercially after the discovery of gold in 1896. The area now called Dana Point was first inhabited by Native Americans, who used the beach for fishing, hunting and gathering. The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish missionaries, who established a mission at Rancho Santa Margarita in 1795. By 1821, two years after California became part of Mexico, Mission San Diego had been replaced by Mission San Pedro Alcázar. In 1888 Captain John Dana purchased land at what is now Dana Point from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $5 per acre. As captain of the local ferry service and other activities in the early days of development, he helped promote agriculture as a way to make money for his community. In 1894 DanaPoint adopted its first written constitution and became an incorporated city under state law. During World War I naval gunfirefighters from USS Potomac (CV-2) attacked German coastal batteries near where today's Marina del Rey sits on Novato Beach on October 20th 1918 killing 12 sailors including 8 Germans while another 11 were wounded or taken prisoner; this event remains commemorated with a plaque at Battery Rock just east of shoreline . During World War II USS PCS Ramage bombarded Japanese installations off Yuma Key on January 15th 1944 resulting in 5 dead crewmen plus 4 Officers killed & 3 missing; this attack remains memorialized with another plaque at Battery Rock off shoreline In 1978 when Cal Poly Pomona students protesting against increased tuition rates marched down Central Avenue to Fourth Street they were met with police forces that arrested 29 students along with 1 professor leading to calls for university reform beginning with then Chancellor Leslie Frazier's resignation After much public outcry University trustees passed Resolution No 9 which set tuition rates referendums that were won by students - setting off major protests throughout campus This led to Gov Jerry Brown taking over regulation of colleges & universities
