In 1821 Mexico ceded nearly all of California to America through Treaty OF Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican–American War. On July 14th 1846 during the Californio Rebellion under Colonel José Joaquín Cámpora y Topete, some pro-Mexican Californios (Californians who had not become Americans) proclaimed themselves an independent republic called Alta California under the leadership of José Figueroa y Quintero known as Don José Castro. On October 16th 1846 American Commodore James Cook's flagship USS Constitution went into port in Dana Point Harbor after a two-month voyage around Cape Horn to explore possible new trading routes in South America and Asia When Captain Cook first saw Dana Point he named it Mission Dolores because his mother had died there years before at age 25 while serving aboard HMS Sandwich as First Officer on her round trip from England to North America

In 1602, Nicholas-Jacques Conte designed a grip for a pistol that consisted of four metal plates that fit into each other to form the “box” shape shown in the illustration. The grip was intended to keep the gun from slipping out of hand. Pistol owners would wear gloves to protect their hands from dirt and food particles on the gun grip. By 1800, pistols were being used in combat and it was necessary for soldiers to hold their guns with either one hand or two hands because one hand was too weak to use both arms effectively. Soldiers started using pistol grips with three metal plates that fit into each other like an egg crate (shown in the next illustration). This type of grip became popular among cavalry troopers because it allowed them to maintain control of their horses when firing at close range. These firearm grips were also used by hunters and farmers who needed to carry their firearms while going about their daily lives.

Dana Point was founded by the Knights of Columbus in 1892 as an agricultural community in what is now Huntington Beach County. It became an important seaport during World War II because it had access to the Orange and San Diego harbors. In 1957, it was merged with Newport Beach to form the city of Newport Beach. The city's name was changed back to Dana Point in 1987 after a referendum vote by its citizens. At present, Dana Point is a major economic center for Southern California, with resorts, businesses and homes located throughout its downtown area and several miles of beachfront properties. Dana Point history began with Father Miguel de la Costilla y Ortega who arrived here from Mexico City on October 10, 1769 as part of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo's expedition which sailed from Acapulco Bay for California under Spanish captain Alonso de Velasquez on November 12th. Gaining entrance into Monterey Bay through straits between Santa Cruz Island and Catalina Island on October 16th he anchored off shore at Punta Cana while seeking fresh water supplies for his men and horses; they were still ashore when local natives burned their boats on December 3rd (Christmas day) in retribution for some thefts carried out earlier that month aboard ship by two seamen The first European settler in Dana point were Pedro Alvarez de Alvarado who landed May 25th 1775 following a party led by José Nieto Two days later De Soto discovered this coast while sailing towards La Jolla He named this place after Admiral Don Francisco Xavier Piñon y Valdés who had been sent out to quench American interest in Californias resources prior to Mexican independence A new land grant of 5,000 acres (2 km²) had been filed with Captain Juan Bautista Landa dated February 9th 1821 but no action taken until eighteen months later when Captain Manuel Nieto submitted his report which recommended founding a mission hereon behalf of His Majesty King Ferdinand VII Of Spain . On March 15th 1824 Fernando Noriega signed an agreement giving rise to what we now know as Ortega Park . Work began immediately upon completion of infrastructure including sawmill , grist mill & blacksmith shop . Dana Point was founded by the Donahue family in 1887. The area became a popular spot for sailors, who built homes and small businesses on the sand dunes that overlook the harbor. In 1912, Dana Point became part of Los Angeles County.
