In 1932 Mayor Harry Ahern purchased all right to build an airfield adjacent to present-day Dana Point Municipal Airport; this purchase led to the development of what is now called Ahern Field which served as home airport for both Naval Air Station Miramar and Naval Air Station North Island until 1978 when NAS Miramar moved away from its original location just north of Dana point after being acquired by Republic Airways Holdings Incorporated (later American Airlines). RanchoSantaMargarita remained active until 1936 when it sold its holdings back to Sutter and Company including most of present day Dana Point Harbor Lighted Ship Landing which later became known as harbor open water Marina with Pier #1 serving today as Maritime Museum ashore portion
