Dana Point, California is a town located in southern California. It is famous for its firearm industry and the Dana Point Pistol Club. The town has been home to many firearms manufacturers over the years, including Winchester, Colt, and Smith & Wesson. The first firearms factory in Dana Point was founded by Hiram Maxim in 1869. At that time, there were only hunting rifles and shotguns made in America. In 1876, Maxim began making handguns in Dana Point. In 1903, Winchester began manufacturing guns here as well. Today, Smith & Wesson manufactures firearms here as well.

Dana Point was founded in 1824 by Captain John Sutter and his team of men who traveled up the California coast. The town was founded on a small island in San Diego Bay, now part of Dana Point National Marine Sanctuary. The first Europeans to Visit Dana Point were Spanish missionaries who landed in 1769. A wharf was built at the mouth of the bay, and early residents used it to export goods they brought down from Mission San Diego de Alcala on Active Coast Island. In 1824, Captain John Sutter sailed his ship "Golden Fleece" into what is now Dana Point Harbor. He named the harbor after himself, hoping people would find it pleasingly appointed and make their homes there. In 1852, America's first railroad reached Dana Point - the Santa Fe Railroad. The town quickly grew as travelers stopped by for dinner or overnight visits during their travels along the coast. By 1870, Dana Point had a population of 2,500 people and its own post office. It became an important stop onthe Southern Pacific Railroad line between Sacramento and Stockton. Dana Point experienced some success during World War II as munitions storage depots were established here for American forces occupying southern California during that time period. However, soon afterwards local businesses went out of business because war-time production diverted resources away from more productive civilian activities such as agriculture and manufacturing
Dana Point is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 8,641 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Imperial Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area.
