It is located on the easternmost edge of San Diego and the eastern border of Orange County. The City of Dana Point includes all of the unincorporated community of Isleta, as well as much of what is now Dana Point Village. The first permanent habitation on Dana Point Peninsula occurred in 1847 when Spanish Franciscan missionaries founded Mission San Marcos del Valle y Península de OC on present-day Doheny Beach Boulevard just north of where it enters Huntington Beach. On December 6, 1849, Mexican soldiers under General Antonio López de Santa Anna burned down mission buildings and killed 28 friars who had been living there for several months. In 1853, American Commodore James Cook sailed into San Diego Bay from Monterey and anchored near present-day Harbor Island to load supplies for his expedition against Mexico's Baja California colony. A small post office was established at "Isleta" in 1853; this became an incorporated town in 1860 when it split off from Mission Valley village to become its own municipality. In 1896, during World War I, USS "Gigantic" grounded on shore at Isleta Cove while en route from Shanghai to Oakland with munitions bound for America; over 1 million gallons (3 million liters) flooded ashore until relieved by a relief ship less than two hours later. Dana Point experienced rapid growth following World War II as military personnel returned home and many families came to live in the area after moving away from coastal cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco during that time period. The city annexed portions of southeastern Orange County in 1957 before becoming an official city within Southern California statehood two years later when then-Governor William Donald Schaefer signed legislation creating the metropolitan area that included most or all Ofcinal Parkland including Dana Point Village which would include Isleta In recent years development has slowed but not stopped with new homes being built along Oak Drive and Signal Hill Road near Government Pier park which offers views towards UCSD & Newport News Shipbuilding yards

During the Vietnam War, local residents supported United States military forces with protesting their policies; one instance occurred when residents shut down Highway 101 to prevent traffic from moving into Hanoi for three days in 1970 following United States Marine Corps involvement in the Tet Offensive movie premiere there that year
