In 1951, Mayor James Rolph designated part of reclaimed fill along San Pablo Bay as "Daly Beach" in commemoration of Captain John Daly's donation and for future recreational use by local citizens. In recent years, parts of Daly City have become increasingly gentrified while other sections have seen an influx of immigrants and refugees seeking affordable housing and jobs opportunities. Today, Daly City is home to a diverse population including professionals and entrepreneurs; artists; students; retirees; and parents with children living outside of California.

In 1924, Daly City annexed part of Oakland and formed its own city government. It officially became a city in 1951 when it amalgamated with Berkeley and other nearby towns to form the Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART). In 1969, BART introducedexpress service between Daly City and San Francisco airport via the new High-Speed rail line known as the "Farewell Express." This service ended in 1994 when BART merged with Muni Metro to become Bay Area Rapid Transit
