The original town site included only a few blocks of present-day downtown Daly City. In 1913, when San Francisco annexed southeasternSan Mateo County (then part of Alameda County), Daly City became part of San Mateo County proper; however, it continued to be known as "Daly City" until 1984 when its full name became "San Francisco–Oakland." During World War II, many American servicemen stationed in Japan were housed at an airfield near Daly City; this led to the nickname "The Airbase Village". In 1957, Mayor George Moscone called for a study that would recommend developing downtown into an active commercial district with high-density housing instead of just remaining rural; this led to the creation of Market Street Station District which now includes much of downtown including South Park Square and much of University Avenue eastward into Berkeley Heights It also led to plans for construction throughout downtown including One Financial Center (now occupied by Bank Of America) which would have destroyed much older architecture dating back to 1849 However these plans were scrapped after Mayor Moscone's death in 1978 due largely to opposition from within his own political party

After years of redevelopment, the city's resurgence began in the 2000s with gentrification occurring around Mission Bay and downtown areas. Today, Daly City is one of Northern California's most ethnically diverse cities with significant African American and Latino populations.
