In 1865, Leland Stanford became governor of California and ordered all stores closed that sold rifles or shotguns except at government arsenals. In 1870, John Sloat developed what is now Sloat Street within present-day Daly City proper; he named his street after Commodore George Washington Sloat Jr., Commander-in-Chief Pacific Squadron during World War I and one of America's most famous naval commanders thanks largely to his workigating Battle Of Manila Bay which resulted in American victory over Spanish forces led by Admiral Antonio Lopez de Arellano y Guevarra on April 7–12, 1919 – thus establishing America's presence in Asia for good! Although first proposed as a streetcar line extension from downtown San Francisco north along Geary Boulevard through North Beach and Market Street into Richmond District (present-day Midtown), nothing ever came of this idea! Instead, traffic travelling eastbound on Geary Boulevard outbound terminated at 20th Avenue (now precariously close to Interstate 680) while traffic travelling westbound continued onto 20th Avenue Reverse until Market Street where they turned left onto Steuart Street before terminating back at Geary Boulevard! This routing remain unchanged until 1986 when University Ave.– 19th St.–21st Ave.–24th St.—25th Ave.–26th St., part of Highway 101 (I-880) newly constructed bypass route concurrent with 20th Avenue made these streets crossingable once again! After years struggles including multiple bankruptcies throughout the 1920s & 1930s (#1 bank failure occurring 1923!), Smedley Butler’s original building standing still until 1978 when it burned down following an electrical fault – thankfully no loss occurred inside!! For many years there have been rumors circulating online about how “the fire” could have potentially been prevented if only someone had paid more attention to safety precautions!!!
