In the early 1900s, Daly City was a small town in Northern California. It was located on the outskirts of San Francisco and its residents were engaged in agriculture and other manual labor. The town's only industry was the production of Adobe bricks, which were used to build homes and churches. In 1906, the city of San Francisco moved from its original location on Market Street to what is now Fillmore Street. This change led to the creation of a new neighborhood within San Francisco entitled "Daly City". The name derived from Captain James Daly, who had purchased land near the current intersection of 16th and Mission Streets in 1892. In 1915, Captain Daly donated 350 acres (160 hectares) to the city for use as an open-air parkland. The area that now includes Daly City became home to over 100,000 people by 1920. During World War II, many local businesses mobilized to support the war effort by producing munitions or providing services such as printing paper tags or delivering food. Some of these businesses remain today including: Alameda Arms Ammunition Company (now part of Brownells), American Tobacco Company (ATK), United Feature Syndicate Inc., Printing House Press, A&P grocery store (now Kroger) and General Electric Corporation's NBC plant. The post-war years saw continued growth for Daly City with development taking place at both surface level and groundwater levels. Today, much of downtown is Home Depot Park with mixed use buildings dating back to before World War II including: Wigwam Hall/National Guard Armory precursor site; Gaylord Hotel/Laundromat; Masonic Temple No 1; First Methodist Church No 2; Southern Pacific Railroad Depot (Now AT&T Wireless); Pioneer Theater; Chico State University campus housing project; Menlo Park Shopping Center redevelopment project; but also several community based organizations located throughout downtown areas like Food Not Bombs etc.). One example that stands out above all else is Downtown United Methodist Church which has been serving homeless individuals since 1981 despite protests from nearby gentrifiers!
