Daly City is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. As of 2017 it had a population of 945. The town site was first surveyed in 1847 and organized as a village in 1856. It became an incorporated city on February 14, 1907. Daly City's nickname "The Gateway to the East Bay" comes from its location between San Francisco and Berkeley on Highway 101 and its easy access to those cities and their universities. The first gun target shooting facility in Daly City was built by J.B. Lenfeste in 1926 out of his garage on North Market Street near present-day Oracle Arena (now part of UC Berkeley). Lenfeste used an old stone quarry next door to shoot targets at 100 yards using Winchester Model 70 rifles with 42 inch barrels. He also sold target stocks and accessories through his shop window for $1 each

The origins of gun targets can be traced back to 18th century Europe.gunners would place small clay disks on a hill or mound to practice their aim and firing skills. Clay disks were also used as decorative items in homes. The early 20th century was a time when handgun training became mandatory for all law enforcement officers in many countries. As soon as pistols became popular, gunners began using them to shoot at small paper targets called “dummy pigeons” that could only be hit if hit inside the body-width circle defined by two lines drawn perpendicular to each other running along the ground (see below). Pigeons were so common at this point that they even made their own paper target: A piece of cardboard about twice the size of a postage stamp was cut into four equal parts and glued together with an adhesive bandage so that it could easily be torn apart into twelve pieces which could then be shot at like missiles (see photo). Each “pigeon” represented one round fired from a pistol during target shooting drills. It is interesting to note that dummy pigeons never posed any real danger because they had no feathers or flesh covering their bodies; instead, they were filled with lead balls which caused them to ricochet off obstacles in flight (see photo). By 1920, it was becoming increasingly difficult to find enough small paper targets large enough for practicing your aim without damaging your pistol’s barrel. So manufacturers started creating “tangible” guns platforms that could stand up against physical damage but still function as Targets (See photo). These platforms consisted of two metal plates placed upright upon which you mounted either a revolver or shotgun barrel with various sighting devices such as an open sights or optics (See photo). By 1928, companies had developed plastic guns mounts which allowed shooters to shoot at Target grade objects up close without damaging their pistols barrels(See photo).
