In 1852, the townsite was enlarged by purchasing from Rancho Rincon de Santa Clara y el Camino Real a tract of land that included present-day Daly City. The harbor at Drakes Bay formed an important commercial center during early Californias days; ships engaged in shipping goods between San Francisco and points east arrived at Sausalito or Point Reyes on Sundays before continuing their journey downriver on Monday morning. On July 16th 1851 David Denny built a wharf next to what is now Pier 14 on Portsmouth Street for use by his shipmates when they unloaded their cargo at Sutter's Mill for shipment back upriver. This early wharf remains one of history's most significant physical landmarks in Daly City today. Sutter's Mill became an important transportation hub for dairy products shipped down the coast from Northern California; it also processed lumber from nearby Douglas fir forests which were exported to various destinations around the world including London and New York City. By 1860 several mills had been built along Portsmouth Street with associated warehouses/factories including Jardine & Co.'s Shipbuilding Yard (now known as Jones Brothers Warehouse) which became known as "the Empress". The mill closed operations in 1886 but remaining buildings are still extant within walking distance of downtown today (See Jones Brothers Warehouse). In 1865 James Wolkoff purchased some acres north of Portsmouth Street where he erected another wharf - this time called "Wolkoff Wharf". This new wharf served both local boat traffic as well as shipments going out into Suisun Bay from inland industries such as textiles and plastics manufacturing farms near Moda Center TODAY! Due to its location just northeast of downtown (see photo), Wolkoff Wharf quickly came to be known locally simply as "the docks." With rapid growth coming about through autosportation via Highway 101 only yards away Downtown Diridon gradually began becoming inaccessible during day hours making access necessary only during evening hours when there was minimal vehicular traffic! By 1950 over 50% of all maritime traffic passing through Suisun Bay passed through Wolkoff Wharf; this created an extremely busy environment which continues into our current day! During World War II USS Pueblo berths were used ashore at Drakes Bay Naval Air Station while other vessels moored nearby converted them into barracks housing tens thousand American troops until 1945 When those facilities were decommissioned USS Pueblo returned home under tow late last year after being docked at Alameda Naval Shipyard for over 35 years! Today you can walk across North Beach pier free from restrictions currently placed upon her!! In 1920 John Fritchey opened up his own grocery store on Market St SE corner First Ave inside what is now Orchard Books(then Chico FoodMart)). For many years John Fritchey operated one stop shop serving everything from groceries to candy! In recent years John Fritchey has relocated his business elsewhere but his legacy lives on throughout Orchard Books!!!
