In the early 1800s, Daly City was a small town in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was located on the western edge of what is now Oakland and had a population of about 10,000 people. The town was founded by Captain John Fergusson and his family in 1851. In 1856, Captain Fergusson donated land to establish the city of Daly City. The first mayor of Daly City was James J. Sheehan. The city of Daly City became an incorporated municipality on December 5, 1917. The city's first gun magazine was built in 1918 by Wm Crain and Company at 777 California Street. At that time, it was one of the largest gun magazines in California. over time, other gun magazines have been established in Daly City including: Browning Arms & Ammunition Company (1925), National Firearms Corporation (1929), Western Gun Works (1932-33), Colt World War II Armory (1945) and Uberti Firearms Corporation (1960). Today, there are more than 100 gun stores located within close proximity to each other in Daly City making it one of the most firearms-friendly cities in Northern California

Daly City was named after Mayor John A. Daly who served from 1903 to 1905 and again from 1913 to 1915. Mayor Daly had been elected Mayor of San Francisco two years earlier but declined nomination for a third term because he desired more money for his mayoral campaign than would be available if he were re-elected as mayor with no more votes than any other candidate who met all requirements set forth by the Board of Supervisors including having been a resident of San Francisco for three months before being nominated; also meeting property qualifications; being able to read and write English; having been baptized or confirmed as a Catholic; owning real estate within one mile of where he lived or serving on some civic board or association.; paying taxes on property located within one mile radius

In 1990, Daly City merged with nearby Palo Alto and formed Palo Alto-Daly City Authority which continues to exist today.
In 1851, the first post office in Daly City opened. The name of the town was changed to Daly City in 1857 after Alcalde Francisco Daly suggested it be renamed for John F. Daly, a congressman from California. The Republican National Convention was held in San Francisco in 1903 and President Theodore Roosevelt delivered his keynote speech at Pier 96. In 1916, the United States Postal Service privatized and moved its mail operations from Sacramento to Daly City. Daly City is located on a major shipping artery called the San Francisco Bay Bridge which links Oakland with San Francisco. There are many local businesses that contribute to the economy of Daly City including Alameda County's largest grocery store chain SuperValu and cable TV provider Comcast.
