Daly City is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 26,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Silicon Valley metropolitan area. Daly City's history stretches back to 1853 when a group of British immigrants named John Daly settled here on Rancho Palomar and began to culture grapes. In 1872, they sold their holdings to American citizens James Murchison and George Fenton for $2,000USD each. In 1907, the city was incorporated as part of San Francisco. The discovery of oil in the early 1900s led to an increase in the number of cars and homes being built in Daly City. Businesses such as Kaiser Permanente bought land around Petaluma and Menlo Park for their new facility. The town quickly became known for its wine production, with many wineries existing until recently including: Chateau Margaux (1910), Gossamer Vineyards (1920), La Tour de Pauillac (1922), L’Atelier de Vigneron (1927), Moulin Rouge (1929) and Riesling Cellars (1976). In 1967, Mayor Dianne Feinstein declared that "Daly City is America's most unequal city", although this claim has been debunked by studies done since then. According to recent data from the U.S Census Bureau, Daly City has one of the lowest income disparities among Utopian cities studied across all 50 states or DOWNTOWN SAN FRANCISCO/SAN MATEO COUNTY -despite having only 5% more people than New York City! This discrepancy can be largely attributed to two factors: firstly there are very few high-income residents living in Daly City compared with other big US cities; secondly it has a much lower concentration of expensive tourist attractions which tend to attract wealthier people while less wealthy residents have access to these same amenities." However despite this low concentration of expensive tourist attractions some businesses have managed to succeed thanks to their dedication towards innovation or creativity over simply making money: notably Googleplex which was founded by Sergey Brin andLarry Page; Facebook which was founded by Mark Zuckerberg; Twitter which was founded by Jack Dorsey...the list goes on and on! Daly City is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 26,883 at the 2010 census. Daly City's economy revolves around technology and professional services. It is home to many high-tech companies and startups as well as to the headquarters of Google and Apple Inc. The first Europeans to visit what is now Daly City were Spanish explorers in 1769, who named it Acapulco de la Ribera de la Salinas after the Rancho La Salina which they discovered near present-day Fremont. In 1846, American prospector John Crippen established a claim on Rancho San Lorenzo hills east of present-day Daly City. The area soon became known as the "Granada Valley". Daly City began as a small town with only 14 people when it was incorporated on February 12, 1912. The name came from Captain James Daly of HMS Beagle who landed there with his convict shipmates on March 25, 1835 during their mapping expedition that followed Juan Bautista Cabrillo's voyage from Mexico to Santa Cruz Island (present day Catalina Island). Captain Daly ordered the men not to speak English until they reached land because he wanted them to feel at home before exploring further inland. Captain Daly's landing inspired founder George Eastman Kodak and his partner Andrew Carnegie to open their first photography studio in 1906 in a room above an old flour mill north of downtown; this originally served as Eastman Kodaks main manufacturing plant for film development until 1967 when production moved into new facilities nearby at 12th Street & Harrison Avenue in Emeryville. In 1916, Hollywood star Norma Shearer opened her own movie theater here – located across from where today’s University Village stores its groceries – called the Norma Shearer Picture Palace which still operates today under different ownership and management than it did when it opened more than 150 years ago! convinced by Harry Cohn (founder of Columbia Pictures) that movies could be made cheaply here instead of being produced out west on larger sums of money, she offered free admission to all films shown here through 1918! Today Los Gatos Boulevard runs along Waite Avenue behind her theater making it one block long between Central Avenue and Spring Street! However most films shown here were silent so operation ceased in 1922 when sound equipment became available for filming outside Hollywood . Except for two short scenes used in an early episode of TV’s “The Adventures Of Superman” filmed just outside Hollywood back then (along Harbor Freeway), all other footage shot inside Norma Shearer Picture Palace during those early days has been lost forever!
