The first people to live here were the Tongva people who were known to have called this area "Pine Canyon." There are several ruins that date back to pre-historic times including some large campfires that may have been used as tombs for chiefs or their families. In 1821, Mexican land grants were made available to American settlers in what is now Los Angeles County. The first settler was George Wickersham and his family who arrived in 1827 from Hartford, Connecticut. They named their new land Cypress after a tree they saw near their house while out hunting buffaloes. The name Cypress comes from two different sources: one from Captain John Cattail's reports of seeing a cedar tree with "a high cypress" growing on it near Mission Viejo Creek during his march through Orange County during 1776, and another source which may be related to Captain James Cook's visit to this region during his circumnavigation of the world in 1777 which led him to call this area "Cypress Forest." TheCaptaincy of La Cañada Flintridge had also been given over part of Rancho La Brea by Governor Manuel Micheltorena as part of Rancho Niguel district on November 8th, 1853 according to Ector Donnelley’s Report #4348A & 4349A filed with Mexico Land Office on January 7th, 1854 . As early as 1840 there were settlements around present day Cypress including parts of Monrovia (now Covina) and Glassell Park (now Van Nuys). A post office was established at Glassell Park on October 3rd, 1840 under the name Monrovia Post Office; however it remained open only until December 6th due to low mail volume. After being closed for about six months Captain David Neely reopened it under the name Van Nuys stagecoach stop but within a few weeks heclosed it again because of high post prices caused by increased traffic along Route 66 coming down into L.A.. On May 10th 1849 Lieutenant Colonel Josiah Butchart organized 500 volunteers from various units loyal unto Commodore Perry at Monterey Peninsula against Juan Bautista Pico real governor ocala presidio de la mesilla y terminados en agosto de 1850 , when hostilities began between USA & MEXICO over boundary changes taken by Commodore Perry.(Donnelley report #4500E filed with Mexican Land Office May 15th 1850) soon thereafter Butchart reorganized volunteer company into battalion under commandof LtCol Andres De Leonbacher who arrived from Tucson AZ late July 1850 just prior Alvarado’s attack Upon General Alvarado’s retreat across Presidio Real Bridge he ordered all Volunteer battalion commanders headquarter at Monterey Peninsula determinedly Fort Tejon should garrison all Barracks except one hospital ) Walker also ordered Captains John Cattail and David Neely commanding detachments eastward towards Sinaloa & Durango .' During Mexican–American War period many local businesses operated such as hardware store(owned by Mr Fenton), bakery(owned by Mrs Mason), saddles(and bridles), flour mill(owned by G H Rice) clothing store(owned by Mrs Sprague), lumberyard(owned by J R McLaughlin), post office (which continued operations until December 6th 1840) grocery store operated by Mrs Barnes
