The first Europeans to visit Cypress were Spanish missionaries in 1764. A mission was built here in 1821 by José Gabriel Moraga y Asís under joint direction of Governor Manuel Nieto and Bishop Francisco Jaro de la Luz y Vicente. The name "Cypress" was given by Captain John Cranch of Veteran's Battalion under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during his campaign against Mexico City insurgents in 1827-28. A post office called San Bernardino had been established at what is now Cypress on December 1, 1827 (the first U.S.-born post office). The town grew rapidly because of its strategic location: near two major wagon roads linking Stockton with Sacramento through Orange County and connection between San Bernardino Valley center via Elsinore Road and Pomona Lakeshore railway station on Southern Pacific Railroad line opening in 1868 made it a key transportation hub for citrus crops grown along these routes. In 1915 Gilbert Sitte designed an Administration Building for University of California Institute of Technology at Riverside (UCR), one block west of Main Street where he also designed lecture halls for UCLA Extension School (now Loyola Marymount University) across from Doheny Hall then still used today as CUIR Museum while development continued eastward below Main Street into what is now Spectrum Health Network headquarters building before coming to an end just south of Interstate 5 just west of Pioneer Boulevard near Route 66 interchange Other notable buildings include: First Baptist Church (1897-1902) - now replaced by Christmastime Wonderland Children's Museum across from Trader Joe's Marketplace; Alma Mater Hospital 1912-1945 - now Alvarado Museum of Art home to internationally acclaimed collectionvancementdivision; American Legion Post #546 1930s-1970s--now Donnybrook Community Center;; Methodist Episcopal Zion Church 1927-1930--now only bell tower remains standing inside churchyard; Girdwood Lodge No 1 1924-1925--later known as Golden West Cafe & Grill; Los Angeles Aquarium 1937-1978)--still operates as an aquarium located adjacent to Los Angeles High School Campus; Girdwood Lodge No 3 1933-1965)-- subsequently became part of Cotton Club nightclub complex housing many high profile entertainers such as Liberace In 1951 Workman Brothers Company began marketing soft drinks under the name "Cypress." In 1978 when Wild Bill Elliott opened his second nightclub called Hollywood Palladium next door theretoon October 15th opposite USC Trojan Stadium following successful years throughout Southern California hosting such performers as Dean Martin live performances etc., Wild Bill purchased land adjoining Hollywood Palladium lot containing both Girdwood Lodge No 3 seen above left bank side prior to that date LOT 4 on right side contiguous with approximately triangular shaped lot bounded North by I 5 Freeway South by Lankershim Avenue East about 2/3 width wide extending Rearward about ¼ width from curb almost touching Onionspring Drive behind Store front Lot #2 also known since that time simply as 'Hollywood Palladium' . july 14 2006 CypressCalifornialist published article about changes taking place within Hollywood Palladium since that time http://www1.cnnnext2boston.com/features/2006/0714/hollywood_palladium
Cypress was founded in 1876 by Captain George Cypress and his wife, Jane. The town was named after the Cypresses' trees that grew along the creek. In 1916, the city of Cypress incorporated as a result of a referendum. In 1948, the city annexed part of Hawthorne and renamed it to Cypress Hills.
