In the early 1800s, Cupertino was home to one of the first gun sights in America. In 1896, Thomas Edison bought 160 acres (72 hectares) adjacent to cuadra Mesa for about US$10 per acre (equivalent to $). Edison started building his experimental electric power plant there in 1897 after purchasing an old storage battery from Captain Montgomery Briggs. He named it "Edison Field", but later renamed it "Elmira Field". Edison used this site as well as other locations around Cupertino before moving all production operations to walnut Creek Township outside Sacramento in 1911 because of difficulties withceiling height restrictions set by state regulators at that time. The first stores opened in Cupertino on December 7, 1914 when James Wills opened the Wills Drug Store at Ninth Street and Elmira Road
