In 1872, Samuel Morse established the first telephone company in California with his brother Edward. The first electrically operated water pump came into service in Cupertino on November 15th, 1877; it was powered by horse power. A steam-powered water pump became operational on February 8th, 1888. In 1916 Apple Inc., then called Associated Telephone and Telegraph Company of America (AT&T), moved to nearby Menlo Park from San Francisco after losing its contract to provide phone service for the San Francisco Municipal Railway (SFMTA). By then AT&T had become one of Silicon Valley's most important commercial institutions with a staff of over 100 people including engineers, scientists and sales people. In 1924 when AT&T merged with Southern Pacific Railroad Company to form Western Electric Corporation, Cupertino became part of Western Electric's newly formed Northern Pacific Railway division headquartered at El Sobrante Boulevard near Stanford University. Apple began marketing their products through Radio Shack stores across the US starting in 1976 before opening their own retail store withinran facility adjacent to Home Depot main campus where they sell all products under one roof including supplies for their development labs as well as components used inside Apple products such as keyboards/mice/trackballs etc...Today there are more than 500 Radio Shack stores open worldwide!
