Today, Culver City has a population of over 8 million people and covers an area of almost 60 square miles (160 square kilometers). The history of Culver City can be traced back to early December 1881 when John Culp began to build his sawmill on Rancho Los Nietos east of downtown. Three years later he sold the mill to Isaac Cook and James Irvine for $2,500 cash. Cook and Irvine developed it into a flour mill with 2-story buildings that still stand today across from East Village Park on State Street near Shoreline Boulevard. In 1898, they opened their second mill which became one of America's largest flour mills until it closed in 1946. In 1916–1917 two groups of businessmen - led by Harry Chandler and George Wirths - merged to form the American Can Company to create what would become America's most successful cannery company outside of Europe or Japan. The company built eight warehouses on Westchester Avenue between North Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard before moving them all to Culver City in 1917 because no other city had space for them. During World War II American Can produced munitions including gasoline drums and other chemical products used in incendiary bombing raids against Tokyo during air strikes known as "Tokyo Busters."
