It is located on the eastern edge of Santa Monica Mountains and bordered by Ventura on the north and east, L.A. At its peak in 1910 it had a population of 100,000 people and employed over 200 workers at three separate factories: Jardine & Mathews shoes company (now Dick's Sporting Goods), Goudreau paper company (now Postmedia Network), and American Telephone Company plant No..2 (later called Western Electric). During World War II much military activity took place in Culver City including production at two aircraft plants run by Boeing Aircraft Corporation: Northrop Aviation Plant #1 near Monrovia Boulevard and Southern Pacific Railway Line tracks running parallel to Topanga Canyon Road just outside downtown CulverCity limits; Northrop Aviation Plant #2 about two miles northeast of downtown off Reseda Boulevard between Dietz Avenue NE and Interstate 5 near Glendale Drive NW). On September 10th 1945 Japanese soldiers were surrendering from Iwo Jima when they sighted fighter planes flying over their location; soon afterwards all hell broke loose with gunfire from both sides as thousands upon thousands of civilians ran towards safety in every direction………………………..
