As early as 1866, locals had started calling what is now Culver City "Culver City" because of sandstone quarries located near where it stands today (the Palos Verdes Fault runs through Culver City). In 1870, John Whipple founded what is now Warner Bros., one of Hollywood's earliest movie studios. By 1900, many other businesses had followed suit including theaters (theaters being built throughout Los Angeles County), restaurants and bars (mostly concentrated along Western Avenue), and a small number of housing units (most within walking distance of downtown). During World War II, Culver City played an important role in supporting military efforts with its large supply terminals supplying materiel to various theaters across Southern California involved in conflicts such as Japan-China War 1945-1946 and European Theater 1944-1945 aka Patton's attempt to cross Europe via sea route from North Africa). After the war ended came a rapid decline in production due largely to shifts in technology and consumer tastes which resulted in increasingly remote filming locations becoming more popular options for filmmakers looking for close-to-the-heart entertainment experiences rather than long takes or productions shot outside urban areas like LA or New York City which are still popular today among directors looking for authenticity
