The name "Culver City" comes from theviator Culver who landed on what is now downtown Los Angeles on October 22, 1887. The area that would become Culver City was originally part of Rancho Palos Verdes Cove and various grants were given to original settlers including General John Culprit and his brother-in-law Commodore George Kidd. In 1907 the Asphalt Paving Company opened its plant in Culver City which led to an increase in business for local businesses such as JB Weld Incorporated (later known as Ford) and American Baking Powder Company ( later known as Nabisco). In 1915 the first movie theater opened in Culver City with seating for 84 people. In 1937 Hollywood producer Harry Cohn purchased all of the land north of Vine Street east of Sunset Boulevard and built his new studio there called Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer which would become one of the most prestigious studios in Hollywood. Cohn also developed a small amusement park called Majestic Mills which closed in 1961 but has been preserved as part of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios park since 1984. In 1951 Universal Pictures moved into their new $4 million building at Olympic Studios across from UCLA's Pauley Pavilion after purchasing property formerly used by Paramount Pictures west of Curbstone Way. UPN became CBS Entertainment before being merged with Time Warner Entertainment plc in 1999 becoming CBS Corporation again until it was sold to Viacom Incorporated in 2006 who then sold it back to CBS Corporation who rebranded it “CBS TV Networks” effective July 1st, 2017
