The first magazine publishers were George W. Anschutz & Sons, who published "Culver City Rifle and Pistol", "Culver City Shotgun" and "City News". In 1929, the company merged with Armoury Publishing Company which had published "Arms and Ammunition". In 1935, Gunnery Press was founded by Major General John L. Lewis who had been commandant of Fort Bliss, Texas during World War I. Lewis wanted to create a paper magazine industry that could compete with Springer's bible publishing businesses. Gunnery Press soon became one of the leading publishers of rifle and pistol magazines in America. In 1940, Gunnery Press merged with Armoury Publications Company which then became known as Armoury-Gunry Publications Incorporated (AGP). AGP continued to publish rifle and pistol magazines until it was sold to Hearst Corporation in 1975.

The first people to live in Culver City were the Tongva people who arrived from Southern California about 1500 years ago. By 1871, there were only 7 residents living in what is now Culver City. In 1907, when the first electric streetlights came on in Los Angeles County, lights began to be served from a switch at 15th Street and Western Avenue which led to Commodore Culver's old home at 160 Beale Street. On February 10th 1909, Mayor William Norris dedicated one block of Grand Ave between Adams and resulting from this dedication created Park Row which still exists today as one of downtown's most well-preserved vestiges. In 1932–1933 during World War II MacArthur made his last visit to America before his death in Japan; he spoke at a rally for war production planned for Saturday night at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue outside of Paramount Pictures studios where he denounced Communism as "the disease of all times" A few months later Japanese Americans were taken into custody during World War II while out celebrating their annual 4 July holiday with friends near Warner Bros Studios lot; they had gathered there hours before U S Forces bombed Pearl Harbor evening US time on December 8th 1941 (the attack on Pearl Harbor was announced by Japanese Broadcasting Corporation hours before its actual occurrence). This event helped spur anti-Japanese sentiment throughout much of southern California leading up to the Korean War when many Japanese Americans serving within the military or those who had known them since childhood left their homes behind finally able to return after that conflict ended but did not reintegrate into American society like others did such as Lillian Hellman who returned two years later after living abroad for decades
