The name "Culver City" comes from the nearby Santa Monica Mountains and the creek that flows through it. The first post office in Culver City opened on September 15, 1887. In 1912, Culver City became an incorporated city with a population of 25,000 people. The area now known as Culver City was first inhabited by Native Americans who hunted deer and other animals near the Santa Monica Mountains. In 1867, General William Tecumseh Sherman moved his army into what is now Downtown Los Angeles after driving Mexico out of California for the second time in history. By 1870, most of what is now Downtown Los Angeles had been developed including parts of present-day Culver City. In 1887, John Culp began to develop parts of what are now North Park and Boyle Heights with land he had purchased from Captain George Sutter at Rancho Nuevo de los Alta Californias (now Chavez Ravine). Culver City is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 134,763 at the 2010 census. It is the unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) of Culver City Hills. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Culver City was made on July 24, 1847 by Captain George Ingalls with his party of ten men under the command of Lieutenant John C. Fremont when they discovered land that would become part of Rancho Santa Anita. The area around present-day Culver City was first inhabited by Tongva Native Americans before Mexican settlers arrived in 1847 and began to settle in what is now Los Angeles County. By 1850, there were more than 60 families living in and around present day Culver City. In 1852, Jervis Johnson founded the town of Hollywood on high ground west of what is now Western Avenue and Orange Drive near Mount Zion Cemetery where he built aadobe house for $500 which became known as the Johnson House. In 1861, General James Halleck ordered General William Tecumseh Sherman to march through Southern California carrying out his Sherman's March from east to west and demonstrated how subordinate Californian towns were to larger centers like New York City during his so-called "March on Washington." As a result of this event, about two thirds of all white residents in Los Angeles County moved out or were forced out as ranch hands or miners during the 1860s Gold Rush; most moved into small towns along I-5 between Pasadena and Anaheim Hills until those areas were annexed by Los Angeles County in 1907. In 1871, Kenneth Meacham patented what would eventually become Mulholland Drive after finding gold while prospecting near Long Beach; it led to later development including homesites for movie stars such as Clark Gable and Fonda at avenues named after him including Vine Street (now Doheny Drive), Sunset Boulevard (now Ventura Boulevard), Ocean Way (now Geffen Boulevard) and Bel Air Road beginning at Credit Valley Parkway north then continuing down Mulholland Drive until it met former UPN local station KFIU Radio Station property currently occupied by Live Nation Entertainment Inc., set back from La Brea Avenue south from Central Parkwest corner La Brea Ave east across from Koreatown nightlife district
