Cudahy is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 7,819 at the 2010 census. It is considered an agricultural and ranching center because of its large amounts of cotton and other crops. Cudahy is also home to the University of California, Riverside. The town was founded by John Cudahy in 1879 as a result of the discovery of gold near the current site. The gold rush brought many people to the area, including John's son-in-law, Harry Hayslett. In 1906, Harry's daughter Alice married George Waddell, who had come from nearby Big Bear City with his family to start a cattle ranch there. George Waddell Jr.'s heirs continued to run their operation until it was purchased by Multnomah County in 1957. The post office at Cudahy first opened on July 1, 1881 serviceable only for nine months due to lack of supplies from Sacramento after the Silt River flood that year. The post office closed on December 12th but reopened again on January 5th under new management with mail delivered both ways between Sacramento and Big Bear City daily until 1907 when it became an express mail service only between Big Bear City and Sacramento due to prohibitionist policies then in effect (the US Post Office having refused letters that did not include "P" for "postage"). In 1904 residents voted unanimously to name their town after General William Tecumseh Sherman who had fought during the Mexican–American War and later served as US Secretary of War under Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D Roosevelt before retiring in 1912. Sherman's Column Monument still stands today just north of Main Street eastbound off I-5 just past exit 137A (exit number changed from 95A back when this freeway was built). There are several interesting stories about Cudahy during its early years: 1) In 1879 local farmers discovered gold while prospecting for crops; within weeks they had built a cabin and started trading goods with settlers in surrounding settlements such as Ontario; soon afterwards John Cudahy arrived from Illinois with his wagon train carrying precious equipment needed for trying to find more gold nuggets than he could carry home himself! 2) On November 11th 1886 four men were killed while working on horseback overgrown Gold Hill Gulch south of present day Cudahy when they were jumped by outlaws led by Texan Jesse Jameson aka “Buffalo Bill” Cody; this event forever affected the region as notorious robbers/killers would frequent these areas looking for easy money! 3) On October 4th 1889 two brothers named Hiram Bogan wired $5000 each into American Express Company account #2144 at Fort Kearny Station located east side OfMain Street North facing water across road now known as Donner Avenue; within minutes one brother received notice via telegraph messenger arriving at Fort Kearny Station that bank balance had been increased tenfold! This story signified how quickly business could grow if wire services like this became available!

Cudahy is a small town in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,242 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale metropolitan area. The name Cudahy comes from the Yokuts word "kuda" meaning "to cut logs." The first white settlers in this area were prospectors who discovered gold and silver in the hills to the north of Cudahy in 1849. A post office called Cudahy was established in 1853, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1909. In 1865, John Wesley Powell led an expedition on his way to explore Half Moon Lake when he passed through Inyo County on his way back from Valley Forge. He named what he saw there San Miguel de las Lomas (now Goodyear Mesa) after General José Antonio de la Serna y Menéndez y Pacheco, commander of Mexican forces that had invaded California during the Mexican War of Independence. The town site was platted on December 12, 1867 by Wm Hennessey and Alfred Parkhurst under authority granted by Governor Pio Nono as part of Rancho San Bernardino Seco grantee Joseph Sutter. On July 15, 1870 George Hearn filed a plat for Cudahy with Juan Bautista Alvarado as recorder; Alvarado sold out two years later to Captain James Treadwell Hume who renamed it Indian Wells after his ranch headquarters at nearby Mohave City (now Palm Springs). In 1907 new sheriff Hiram Bingham erected a jail near where now Main Street meets First Avenue which became known as Sheriff's Court House Square; afterward it served as municipal hall and offices until its demolition and replacement by Town Hall during World War II. During Prohibition days most businesses closed but many continued operations as speakeasies or used their employees instead to transport alcohol back and forth between states while avoiding detection by federal law enforcement officials along Interstate 10 via drive-in windows across state lines On April Fool's Day 1933 local newspapers reported that an oil well had been drilled just east of town near present day Cottonwood Canyon Road; subsequent discovery revealed this well actually belonged to Standard Oil Company which had leased land from Pima County for development purposes However within hours of publication public domain photos show that not only no oil emerged from the well but likewise no wells were drilled anywhere near Cudahy during 1933 even thoughStandard Oil company's lease allowed such activity
