It is located on the east side of Big Bear Lake and has aideshow, golf courses, and a few stores. Cudahy was founded by Englishmen in 1859 as an agricultural colony named Cedar Grove. The name means "place where cedar trees grow." The town started as a farming community with about seventy families living in small cabins on High Mountain. A sawmill and gristmill were built soon after the first post office was opened in 1860. In 1876, the first railroad came through town; it was called the San Bernardino & Riverside Railroad and ran from Los Angeles to San Bernardino. The name of the town changed to Cudahy after Jens Cudsgaard (1824-1912), founder of Lumberton, Oregon (now part of Portland). In 1905, John Wittell bought land east of town for $5,000 and began development which included two large mills: one for making lumber and another for producing cottonseed oil. A year later Wittell donated his land plus some buildings to become what is now known as US Department of Agriculture headquarters. In 1917-1918, when World War I broke out, many residents went into military service; they brought their food supplies with them back to their homes so that they could continue eating while they were away from home. As World War II started, many more people decided not to go into military service because there seemed like no good reason why they should when there were so many other countries available to fight! After the war ended there were still plenty of people who wanted to get involved with new things but didn’t have time or money to do anything else! This led to people starting businesses such as Radio Corporation of America (RCA) which manufactured radios and electronic equipment from 1948 until 1980s when it made its move into digital products!
The first European to sight the area now known as Cudahy was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1579. The area had been part of the Tongva people for many years and Spanish traders were active in the region. A trip by Hernando de Soto in 1543 found a large saltwater lagoon near present-day San Bernardino County and named it "Rio Grande" after his victory over the Chumash people at that location. In 1776, José Gabriel Cerda y Valdivia founded Rancho San Bernardino on what is now east of downtown San Bernardino. This rancho was located on land that later became part of Cudahy. cerda y Valdivia used this land to build up a small town called Villahermosa which he named after Queen Victoria of England. In 1821, Rancho El Presidio was granted to Major Antonio Jiron Monterey who made it into a military post with civilian occupants. From here, Mexican forces fought against Californios during the Alta California Rebellion in 1847-48. In 1885, General James Shields took possession of what is now east of downtown San Bernardino when he became governor of California following its admission into the United States as a state. He began construction on what is now fronts First Street and Vine Street towards what is today Gadsden Square while also constructing Fort Myer which served as his headquarters during various campaigns throughout California’s history including those against Mexico and Native American forces
