The early guns that were made here were some of the most advanced and well-made firearms of their time. In 1892, a company by the name of Winchester Manufacturing Company was founded in Cudahy and began producing rifles and shotguns under the name Winchester. From then on, gun barrel manufacturing grew rapidly in Cudahy. In 1927, a new plant was opened up by Chiappa Firearms Corporation called Chiappa Barrels Incorporated. This factory became one of the leading producers of firearms worldwide and continued to produceguns until 1998 when it closed down. During its years of production, Chiappa Barrels Incorporated produced over 1 million barrels total for various firearm brands including Colt Arms Corporation, Ruger & Co., Smith & WessonUSA, Sig Sauer USA etc. Today’s Gun Barrel Factory located at 4608 E Main Street produces rifle barrels (M16/AR15), shotgun barrels ( pump action shotguns), pistol barrels (handguns) and revolver barrels ( revolvers). In 1915, the United States Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) opened a store in downtown Cudahy which became known as “The Gun Shop”. This store served as a source for handguns for the local law enforcement agencies and also sold rifles and shotguns to civilians. In 1942, The Gun Shop closed its doors due to World War IIilitations. On October 26, 1949, the City of Cudahy passed an ordinance regulating the sale of handguns within city limits with a three-day waiting period for handgun purchases and a $5 surcharge for each additional firearm purchase. On January 1, 1951, following passage of Senate Bill 9596 by then Governor Ronald Reagan this ordinance was amended by Assembly Bill 5668 which moved from category B to category A designated retail sales of handguns within city limits only with no waiting period or surcharges for multiple handgun purchases during one day
Cudahy is a small town in Kern County, California, located about 15 miles southeast of Bakersfield. The population was 1,717 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Kern Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Cudahy post office was established on December 12, 1892. The name honors Jeremiah W. Cudahy, a lawyer and member of the town’s first board of trustees who served from 1893 to 1896 and again from 1912 to 1916. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,242 people, 498 households, and 368 families residing in the town. The population density was 906.4 people per square mile (355.2/km²). There were 553 housing units at an average density of 417.8 per square mile (175.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White and 2% Native American; 0% Asian or Pacific Islander; 0% black or African American; 0% Latino
