It is part of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley metropolitan area. The town was founded by John Cudahy in 1876 and named after him. The first post office opened in 1877. A sawmill and gristmill were built in the early 1800s, but both have been gone for years. Cudahy had a population of 1,500 people when it incorporated as a town in 1961. Today, most of the businesses are small-townowned or related to agriculture or local services like water distribution or firefighting. Most residents still rely heavily on farming and ranching activities which provide jobs for many people who live hereabouts; however there are also some more recent industries that have sprung up: medical marijuana dispensaries (Cannabis America), local software development firms (Enderue Software and Skyline Softworks), and several restaurants serving primarily organic food (The Wellspring). Cudahy is a small, unincorporated community located in Kern County, California. The area now comprising Cudahy was first settled by Mexicans in 1847. A post office called Cudahy was established in 1852, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1916, a group of farmers named Jorgensen purchased some land adjacent to the town and began to build what would become their new town. They named it after Abraham Lincoln Cudahy (1827-1911), an American politician who served as mayor of Sacramento from 1865 to 1868 and as secretary of state from 1870-1871. In 1922, the United States Post Office Department shortened its name to Cudahy and incorporated the community into Kern County. The townsite retains its original name today. According to the United States Postal Service, Cudahy is one of only two remaining communities in Kern County that remain completely rural – both others are Banning (population: 714) just east of downtown Bakersfield and tiny Cottonwood (population: 602) off Interstate 5 near Needles). As a result, much attention has been paid to thisisolated outpost since it opened up for business last year following years of planning by local officials working with federal grant money from USDOE’s Regional Centers program
The area that is now Cudahy, California was first settled by the Tongva people in the late 18th century. The town of Cudahy was founded on December 2, 1851 by a group of Spanish missionaries. The town was named for José Culpín de la Vega, who had been an early settler in what is now Santa Clara County. In 1897, the town and county were merged into Santa Clara County.
