The history of ammunition in Cudahy, California can be traced back to 1855. The first commercial ammunition store in the area was opened by John P. Maginnis at 4th and Market Streets. Ammunition continue to be sold and distributed from this store until 1903 when it closed its doors for good. In 1906, the Cudahy Arsenal was established and began manufacturing artillery rounds using new propellant powders developed by Captain Samuel Henson of Winchester Armory in New Haven, Connecticut. This allowed for a larger variety of munitions to be produced without having to extensively test each round before release into the market. Cudahy is a small town in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 9,828 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Cuyamaca River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cudahy were fur traders in 1821. A post office was established there in 1827, and by 1830 it had a population of about 60 people. In 1836 Californian Mormon missionaries arrived here from Utah and began preaching the gospel to Native Americans who lived nearby. By 1840, however, most of the natives had died from disease or battle with settlers. In 1850 John Sutter founded the city of Sacramento on parts of Rancho San Joaquin which he had purchased from Manuel Lisa de Ayala y Ulloa for $100 per acre (later renamed Rancho Los Alamos). This made Cudahy one of several towns within easy driving distance of Sacramento for miners and their families seeking work in new goldfields discovered along California's eastern coast during that decade. In 1861 Anthony Wright built a toll bridge across the Cuyamaca River which became known as Wright's Bridge because its owner, Augustus Wright, paid tribute to General Joseph Hooker by naming his son after him when Hooker got command of an army invading Mexico during that year's American Civil War. That year also saw another important development in local history: Wm Hensley bought 5 acres (2 hectares) north of Wright's Bridge from Augustus Wright for $3 per acre ($ [$ ]/acre at that time). This land would become part of what would later be called Hensley Park. Wright passed away in 1865 and his wife soon married Wm Hensley; they continued to live there until her death in 1901. After her death their home went into foreclosure but was finally sold to local ranchers Edwin Pogue and Harry Nunn who kept it until 1954 when it was auctioned off to James Geiger for use as a model farm complex called Geiger Manor (now part of Diablo State University). With growing industry nearby and increasing suburban growth throughout Fresno County over this period more residents migrated westward into what is now Cudahy; however most original settler families still remain today including many descendants of those early pioneers such as Fred Henson whose family continues farming land adjacent to their original homestead site on Old Stage Road just north-east Of Kelly Avenue where they still reside today
