In 1892, American astronomer Harlow Shapley discovered the first planet beyond our solar system, and in 1919, he found evidence of an extrasolar world. Covina's history can be traced back to 1852 when John L. Covin, a surveyor, bought land in what is now the city of Covina. He named his new town after himself, and began building homes and businesses. The town grew quickly, and by 1870 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1872, Covina became an incorporated municipality. From then on, the town's growth was rapid and unrestricted, thanks to its location at the mouth of the Santa Ana River. By 1907, Covina had a population of over 2,000 people and was considered one of Southern California's "most important cities." On December 5th of that year, Covina became an independent city with its own government and economy.

Covina is located on the southern edge of Kern County and is bordered by Bakersfield to the north, Palmdale to the east, and Lancaster to the south. The present town site was founded in 1907 when land grants were given to residents of Covina Rancho de la Venta subdivision east of Highway 101 by Representative James Fenton of Los Angeles County. Many local businesses offer their services within walking distance of residents’ homes or within minutes' drive using public transportation such as BART or Caltrain lines that run through the community center which also provides shops and restaurants for locals as well as a movie theater and several smaller amusement arcades throughout the year. There are also several golf courses nearby including one owned by Arnold Palmer that overlooks California City Lake from its course near Mount Baldy Road southeast of town limits

Covina is a small town in Inyo County, California, located about an hour east of Los Angeles. It was founded in 1887 by George Covino and his wife Eliza Cavallo as a citrus orchard. The Covinos were the first white settlers in Inyo County and are buried there. The town was incorporated on February 17, 1909. It is part of the San Bernardino–Riverside metropolitan area. The population was 8,871 at the 2010 census. The discovery of oil near Covina in 1923 led to rapid growth for the town during World War II as an important military base for Signal Mountain Air Force Base and other nearby installations. However, development accelerated after the war ended and Covina became an agricultural center with cotton plantations until the early 21st century when its economy shifted to services such as health care, education, and technology jobs related to Riverside County's growing population Centers City (Newhall) and San Bernardino (Jackson).
Covina was founded in 1870 by Captain George Covin and his wife, Sarah. The Covinas were a wagonload of Eastern European Jews who had come to California to escape the Holocaust. Captain Covin fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a deputy sheriff in San Bernardino County. In 1881, he married Anna Jane Smith and they raised six children.Captain Covin died in 1907 and Mrs. Covina moved to Pasadena with her children where she continued to raise them until her death in 1951.
