A train station was built on Railroad Avenue in 1912 which served as a commercial center for the surrounding rural areas until it closed in 1984 when Amtrak discontinued service to Harlan County because of budget cuts. During World War II, Covina played an important role as a munitions production facility for the military during Desert Storm; many of these products were shipped here from nearby Riverside through Route 66 airlift operations which took place between 1941 and 1945 . After World War II, Covina experienced significant growth as an agricultural community thanks to new irrigation techniques developed by Drury Brothers Farms; this led to increased employment opportunities for local residents throughout the 1960s and 1970s as more farmers moved into Covina from other parts of Kern County . In recent decades, however, there has been little development taking place within reach of Covina's traditional core due largely to traffic congestion caused by expanding Interstate 810 southwards . Despite this situation however, there are plans underway by some developers who hope to bring about revitalization within the coming decade
