Gun targets have been a part of the history of Covina, California for many years. The first target was erected in 1892 by E. W. Fenton and Sons, a gunsmiths located in Covina. Gunners from nearby towns would come to shoot at this target during its construction. In 1906, the Covina Rifle Club erected a large wooden target that could be used for shooting practice or competition. This target was one of the first in the area and quickly became popular among shooters. The next year, 1907 saw the erection of another large target at South Whitaker Road and Saugus Avenue close to where present-day Covina High School is located. This take-off wood Target had an artificial turret that could be aimed at with ease. The Targets were often used as photo opportunities for children who would go trick or treating near them while parents watched their children shoot at the targets from behind home windows! In 1916, another large wooden target was erected on East Green Street opposite Court House Square in Covina Heights Park. It remained standing until it was destroyed by fire in 1978! This event also served as the occasion to award local youngsters with scholarships for excellence in school subjects such as mathematics, science or engineerry! A few years later (1921), Covina High School Republicans erected a very tall white steel barrel into which students could place their rounds without fear of hitting someone else! They became known as “The Goons” because they were so high up and easily visible from anywhere within range! (pictured) After World War II ended, there was quite a change taking place throughout America due to technological advances within our society and country’s economy; Specifically firearms manufacturers began producing more handguns than rifles/shotguns which made gun targets obsolete very quickly! As result, most all old rifle/shotgun targets have long since been demolished or mothballed – leaving only these handgun targets standing testament to Covina’s past firearm history!!!

The community was formed in 1887 when land was donated by John Sutter to create a new township within Kern County. The name "Covina" originated from one of Sutter's daughters who called her home "Coveland." Covina also has several thousand acres (2 km²) of forested land which provides cover for deer and other wildlife. According to the United States Census Bureau, Covina has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2010, there were 7,527 people residing in Covina Township: 3,088 households (51%) married couples living together, 2,818 unmarried partnered individuals (19%) with no children under 18 living with them, 1,664 widows or widowers age 65 or over (14%)

One reason Covina flourished was its location on major trade routes connecting Los Angeles with other parts of the state and Mexico. Another key factor was Covina’s status as a transportation hub. The city used its location at the junction of two major highways –State Route 118 and Interstate 10 – to become an important commercial center during the late 1800s and early 1900s. During World War II, Covina played an important role in providing war materials to America’s allies. Many residents also served in military service during that conflict. After the war, many people relocated to CovINA from other areas in Southern California because of new opportunities present in postwar society. These new arrivals helped create a strong community culture that continues today
