Covina, California is a small town in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 26,814 at the 2010 census. Covina is bordered by Archer City to the south and east, Canoga Park to the north and west, and West Covina to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit Covina were Native Americans who traveled overland from Southern California in search of trade goods. In 1821, Captain John C. Fremont explored this area and named it after his old friend General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana (1768-1846). Santa Ana had served as lieutenant colonel of Spanish forces in Orange County during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). When Mexico lost that war, he became a U.S. citizen and moved to Alhambra with his family in 1847. He became involved in politics as an agent foradjustment on behalf of Mexican immigrants living in East LA. In 1851 he was elected supervisor of Los Angeles County In 1860s two brothers named George and Cyrus McCormick founded a flour mill near present day Covina Boulevard/Highway 405 interchange; their mill soon became one of America's leading flour mills producing billions of dollars' worth of flour each year for export around the world. The McCormick family also possessed large holdings in real estate development throughout Southern California including Covina Hills/Canoga Park/West Covina neighborhoods which they called "the Hills". The McCormicks are buried at Westminster Abbey cemetery adjacent to London's Westminster Palace where Queen Victoria was born on November 14th 1865 while her father King George IV was dying following a long illness; both parents are buried there along with other members of their royal families including Empress Eugenie (1819-1876), King Albert I (1837-1901), Duchess Louise (1848-1920)and Princess Beatrice (1902-1997).
