Covina, California is a city in the San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population of Covina was 66,887 at the 2010 census. The name "Covina" is from the Spanish word for " oak tree." Covina was founded in 1881 as a small town on the east side of Palmdale and grew to become one of Southern California's most populous cities. In 1924, Covina became an incorporated city and its first mayor was Leslie Foote. In 1959, Covina became the first city in San Bernardino County to be designated a "smart growth" community. From 1886-1892, John Millington Norvell and Jesse James Crocker were both employees at Smith & Wesson Corporation before starting their own company calledNorvell Crocker Firearms Company which manufactured revolvers and shotguns under various brand names including Norvell, American Magazines and Cedar Rapids Rifle Company. In 1892 they merged with Ebenezer Colt Manufacturing Company to form Colt Firearms Corporation which continued manufacturing handguns until 1911 when it merged with White City Arsenal (later renamed White City Armory Holding Corp.) to become Browning Arms Corporation. guns produced by Browning Arms Corporation included those used by Ulysses S Grant during his presidency and other prominent figures such as Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D Roosevelt. At its peak production volume in 1913-1914 Browning Arms Corporation produced over 2 million pistols per year

Covina has been home to many famous people over the years including: Hollywood star William Holden (1902-1992) who first filmed in Covina in 1939; singer-songwriter Ray Charles (1915-1989); actor Clint Eastwood (1946-2018); business magnate Larry Ellison (1974-present); and entrepreneur Kevin Bacon (1945-2013).

Covina was founded in 1881 by James Covina and his wife, Emma. The Covinas were the first white family to live in Covina. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence and soon became a major center for local trade and industry. By 1900, Covina had become an important agricultural community with over 100 businesses and 2,000 residents. In 1918, the town was renamed after General John J. Pershing in recognition of its role in World War I.
