The area that now makes up Covina was first inhabited by the Tongva people and later by the Kumeyaay people. The name Covina comes from two settlements in this area: Covina Park and Covina Heights. The name Covina Heights is sometimes used as an alternative for Claremont City because it has a more cordial relationship with Claremont Hills and its residents feel they should be given their own name. The city was incorporated on February 24, 1887. It built up slowly until World War II when it grew rapidly thanks to munitions production. Today, Covina is one of Southern California's most diverse cities with a wide range of cultures represented. Its economy depends largely on agriculture, which produces fruits and vegetables; manufacturing; trade; and services such as education and health care. Covina's history begins with its founding as part of Rancho Cucamonga Mexican land grant dating back to 1800s A.D.. The Tongva were Native Americans who lived in what is now Orange County before migrating northward to find new land grants during Mission Santa Anita era (1829-1850). In 1853, Rancho Cucamonga became part of Glendale Mexican land grant which also included parts of Pasadena and western Riverside counties today’s Riverside County and east Simi Valley). In 1866 these areas were combined into one large Grant named Rancho San Andreas which encompassed all present-day Los Angeles County including Covina except for unincorporated areas east of Interstate 10 within Ventura County today’s Kern County). Covina began as an agricultural town on the east side of what is now the city of Los Angeles. The first post office in Covina opened in 1887. Covina became a municipio (municipality) in 1923 and was named after James Fenton Coville, who served as its first mayor. The city annexed part of Santa Monica City in 1951 and then annexation total Santa Monica City and other areas north to Burbank Boulevard in 1954. In 1957, the eastern boundary of Covina was shifted westward along Canoga Avenue to include parts of Downey and Garden Grove counties. On December 17, 1959, it was announced that Covina would become an independent city with its own charter and government within one year. Kovacs Properties Inc., which had been buying up land for development throughout southern California since the early 1960s, filed for bankruptcy protection on February 15, 1980 and sold most of its holdings to Victor Peretz for $5 million The Kovacs properties were used for many years as a testing ground for new urban planning ideas such as Carondelet Plaza which would have been located across from US 101 near downtown Los Angeles; however no plans ever came to fruition due to financial troubles at Kovacs Properties Inc.. Finally on April 14th, 1992 when another failed attempt by Peretz to take over Kovacs Properties led to a riot that destroyed much property including some car dealerships before being quelled by police using tear gas

In 1924, the Covinos donated land to create the current community of Covina.
