By the 1930s however, most residents had moved away from agriculture because it was no longer feasible to maintain large herds of cattle or sheep above ground; instead they built housing developments such as Sunnyside at Canoga Park Boulevard and Western Avenue which remain today among the largest single-family homes in Orange County.[1] However there were still sporadic dairy operations that continued until about 1965 when all but one farm closed due to Prohibition prohibition having ended two years earlier while prices for milk had quadrupled since its peak in 1920. The last commercial dairy operation in Covina closed down on October 15th 1985,[2] at which time local resident Art Smith inaugurated "The Great Milk Famine."[3] In recent years there have been occasional efforts to reopen local farms so that visitors can experience traditional rural life up close but these have not resulted in any significant progress yet[4]. Today, much like many other American cities during this period after World War II suburbanization accelerated throughout Southern California making job opportunities available outside of farming while also changing how people interacted with each other as transportation became more accessible outside of farmer's markets. This area became known as Indian Wells after a cattle drive discovered springs here on December 12, 1875 led by Capt John Sutter from Fort Yuma during his Mormon Battalion's winter encampment across from modern-day Corona del Mar. The name Cameo Creek was also given this location for an orange grove near present-day Seventh Street and Cameo Avenue which Coloma Winterburn established in 1876 before moving his business to 7th Street and Arroyo Avenue where it continued until annexation of Riverside County in 1901 In 1902, two men named Hiram Bingham and William Joice bought land adjoining what is now Covina Boulevard from Joice’s father-in-law for $2,000 They began developing their new town on a small parcel of land they had acquired east of Interstate 10 – just beyond today’s Old Town Cemetery – starting with housing for themselves and their families around what are today Bingham Park (now called Northwood Village), Eastlake Drive (today’s Donnybrook Village), Belmont Drive (present day Higbee streets) and Meridian Place (now Crescent Heights). Bingham announced that he would like to rename his town “Covina” because its Location near Interior Southern California made it stand out against other towns that were located further inland such as Palm Springs or Redlands At this time there only existed one tiny village called Idlewild within Riverside County boundaries where most residents worked outside of county limits doing things such as dairy farming or offering services such as accounting or lawn care Riverside County Supervisor Wm Dickey expressed interest in annexing Covina but Bingham asserted that he wanted his town to be its own separate entity with its own governing body including a mayor, court system etcetera which would have been unconstitutional under then current county regulations
The Covina area was first populated in the late 1800s when Mexicans began to settle in what is now Covina. The area became a part of the United States after Mexican independence from Spain in 1821. Theobe ranching began here and continued until the early 1920s. After World War II, many new housing developments were built in the Covina area as people migrated to jobs in Southern California.
