In 1916–17, Manuel Miranda built a steel plant on present-day Pico Boulevard east of Interstate 5 near Santa Ana for the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T). The plant was demolished in 1991 after AT&T sold its interests in the company to Time Warner Inc., which then merged with AOL Time Warner Incorporated (now Verizon Communications) to create Comcast Corporation (now Comcast). In that year also, construction began on what would eventually become Stanford University's new campus south of downtown Costa Mesa. That campus is now known asStanford University Rancho Mirage Campus. The city's first post office opened in 1896 and continued operation until 1918; its last ZIP code was 92627. The city's first mayor was Francisco Jirones y Ramos who served from 1895 to 1898 . He later became sheriff of Orange County and served two terms before his death in 1904. After Jirones' death, his wife María Luisa Fernanda Vásquez took over governorship until she died in 1908; then succeeded her husband Manuel Miranda as mayor until 1913 when he took office again under newly elected Mayor Jorge Ayerbe III who had been appointed by Governor John Wickersham Jr.. Ayerbe served one term before retiring due to ill health in 1915; his successor Fernando Woodson ran unopposed for reelection that year but lost control over annexation proceedings during World War I so that Los Angeles annexed portions of Anaheim instead which led to Donnybrook Canyon being created within Costa Mesa boundaries
The town of Costa Mesa was founded on December 3, 1887 by J.P. Morgan and his partners, John D. Rockefeller and David Rockefeller. The name Costa Mesa is Spanish for "costa" or "coast." The original town was located in what is now the city of Newport Beach. A second town,Costa Mesa Heights, was established in 1923 west of downtown and became a suburb of Irvine. The current downtown area was built between 1958 and 1960 as a result of the growth of the oil industry in Orange County.
