Costa Mesa (formerly known as Costa Mesa, California) is a city in Orange County, California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 56,353. It is located on the southern tip of Santa Ana Island and is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city's name comes from the Costilla Hills neighborhood which it surrounds. The first Europeans to visit what is now Costa Mesa were Spanish missionaries in 1776. The area that would become Costa Mesa was part of Rancho San Diego de la Cañada before being given to Captain José Manuel Buenaventura by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado on July 12, 1821 for $10,000. The town site was chosen because of its advantageous location between two small rivers: Palo Alto and Los Osos Creek. A post office called Costilla was established in 1827 but closed due to lack of customers. In 1853, James Irvine built an orange orchard here and named it after himself; his brother John built another orchard nearby about 1860. In 1874, a group of Southern Californians who wanted to escape cultivation during the great drought decided to build their own community on Laguna Beach peninsula east of Corona del Mar because they felt they could do better than “the half-breeds” living near them in towns like Fillmore and Pasadena
The first permanent European settlement in California was by the Spanish in 1769. The area that is now Costa Mesa was part of Rancho Santa Margarita, a grant given to Juan Manuel Nieto and his brother-in-law, José de Alburquerque, on December 6, 1769. In 1821, following the Mexican War of Independence and subsequent annexation of California by Mexico, Costanoan landowner José Gomez sold 4,500 acres (2 km2) ofCosta Mesa east of Interstate 5 to Captain John B. Ellis for $5 per acre (0.24 ha). At this time the area included present-day Costa Mesa Boulevard and parts of Newport Beach and Laguna Beach.
