The city of Costa Mesa, California was founded in 1849 by Spanish missionaries. The name means "the port of the great sea." The city became an agricultural center in the early days of its existence and is still home to a large number of farms and ranching operations. Today, Costa Mesa is a thriving metropolis with a population of over 125,000 people. The history of Costa Mesa can be traced back to when Spain set out to establish a presence in what is now California. In 1769, Father José Gomez discovered oil shale near present-day Arroyo Seco and named the area Santa Barbara County after the saint whose feast day it was celebrated. By 1847, however, Mexican land grants had been established throughout Southern California and many missions were abandoned or secularized. It wasn't until 1849 that a group of Spaniards led by Fray José de la Peña erected the first mission in what is now Costa Mesa. The Mission San Fernando Rey de Cristo was built on land granted by Mexico as part of Rancho Rinconada del Sur y Tustin (Rancho Los Padres) chain which stretched from Monterey Bay up into central Orange County. The goal of this project was to convert the Ahumada Indians who lived near Stockton into Christianity and bring new life to an area that at that time lived largely off hunting and fishing opportunities available only within three miles of their homes. After years of construction and following several failed attempts, including one during war with Mexico, Ventura County began receiving missions from Mayflower fathers under Father Juan Bautista Escalante in 1797-98. On October 16th, 1821 – just two months afterFather Escalante's death – Padre Francisco Xavier Menéndez Pacheco arrived at Ranchería La Esperanza carrying 4 friars with him as well as 1 lay brother with supplies for 10 families who would build 8 huts on Rancho Rinconada del Sur y Tustin east side Sacramento River about 5 miles south west Of modern dayCosta Mesa It should be noted that while there are numerous sources which claim Menéndez Pacheco landed at Isla Negra on November 16th -1799 his landing actually took place ashore onshore some 25 nautical miles due north about 3 leagues from where Point Conception now stands On December 12th 1800 Mexican General Antonio López de Pavón ordered all Spanish Missions throughout California abolished without proper notice or compensation therefore any vestiges left behind such as Mission San Fernando Rey de Cristo were also abolished . This order caused great commotion among local Californios who saw this as another assault against their community without democracy being allowed so they went onto action ..... Furthermore many locals decided to move away from mission areas because they no longer received support or protection from Mexico . So when news reached them about Mexican troop movements nears their positions they quickly moved inland towards Palo Alto trying to stay hidden but eventually made contact with US troops passing through on their way downriver ..... [This event] marks the beginning of war between Californios & Mexicans ....[Note: A map showing locationsof various missions throughout California during this time period can be found here.] 6 more weeks passed before something finally happened; orders arrived from President James Kansan stating all remaining missions must be surrendered immediately or face Destruction! Assembling all forces possible individuals prepared for battle including 200 horsemen rode out across hills towards Mission San Fernando Rey De Cristiocolorado open field leading upslope into thick forest later discovering small stream running right past estate today known as Jordan Road ...... After crossing over small stream skirmish ensued resulting in few casualties prior retreating back home ........ actualbattlefield occurred around mile marker 7 along edge OF old Costasme town limits today’s Jordan Rd..... [Eventually] Alvarado retreated northeastward taking most men prisoner while smaller force engaged American cavalry outside town limits trapping many more Americans inside town....... American losses are not known but estimated dozens killed...... Now 32 years later much has changed .... Many people believe if it weren't for US intervention then riots may have occurred .......
