Costa Mesa is a city located in Orange County, California. Founded on February 14, 1915 by American soldiers stationed at the nearby Fortisal Basecamp, the city was named after José Costa, who had been martyred in Spain during World War I. The population of Costa Mesa peaked at 20,808 in 1951 and has since decreased to 15,859 residents as of 2010. The creation of the Panama Canal led to an influx of people and businesses into Costa Mesa from Southern California and elsewhere in the United States. In 1916, when construction began on what would become known as Santa Ana Plaza Boulevard (now Seaside Boulevard), business owners along that street lobbied for its naming as Claremont Avenue after their home state of Clarendon – also near Los Angeles – because they saw that as a symbol of community support for the new canal project. When it opened on November 5th, 1914 under President Woodrow Wilson with a cost of $25 million dollars ($three billion today), the Panama Canal was one of America’s most impressive feats. The city became known as “the Gateway to Southern California”. Although not initially intended for single-family dwellings, growth in Costa Mesa necessitated more than just housing developments; instead, builders erected multiple buildings side by side so that homes could be rented or sold together. This formality gradually disappeared over time and now only remains as an occasional curiosity featuring tall brownstones next to shopping centers or Interstate 5 freeways. One significant event which occurred during this period was the opening of Disneyland on October 1st, 1955; however, it would not be until 1984 that Costa Mesa would truly receive its nickname “The City That Time Forgot” due to its lack thereof in terms of development density and popular tourist attractions relative to neighboring cities such as Anaheim Hills and Malibu Creek Valley (then part of Beverly Hills). Even then though relations between locals and visitors remained generally good until relatively recently (especially given Disneyland’s continuous success), various complaints have arisen about high rates for parking permits/ privileges/accessibility within Disneyland itself which often drive away first-time visitors while also disadvantaging older residents who may find themselves unable or unwilling to purchase tickets online or through official channels (such as Meet & Greet opportunities). In 1821, a group of Spanish American soldiers under the command of José Joaquin Murillo advanced on San Diego from what is now Southern California. The expedition was successful in achieving its goals, and by 1824 the area had come to be known as Californios (Spanish Americans). The first permanent English-speaking settler in the area was John Bigelow, who arrived in 1795. He named his new land Rancho San Diego de Alta California after himself. In 1823, Antonio Maria Costa moved to Rancho Santa Margarita del Oro and started a rancho that would eventually become part of the Rancho Santa Anita complex. In 1828, Eduardo Aramburu purchased parts of Rancho San Diego de Alta California from Bigelow. He named it La Jolla because it lay on a promontory called La Jolla Point. In 1853, Don Mariano Castro bought part of La Jolla point and put up a small chapel there which became known as El Pueblito de Nuestra Señora del Carmen y Nuestro Señor Jesús. In 1861, during the Mexican Civil War, General Santiago Mejía fought at Palo Alto against Francisco Villa and emerged victorious with many casualties but lost his eyesight in battle. After reaching Mexico City for medical treatment he returned to America where he died in 1865 at age 73 years old; this event is commonly cited as being one of the main reasons forevinced split between Anglo-American and Mexican American civil wars over control of California following Mejía's death
